are fine, and we can and do create some custom reports. The canned reports for A/R and P&L's, etc. and we use the payroll service with QB which I think is an additional $300 per year subscription we print our paychecks from QB with all payroll taxes automatically calculated and tracked. We print checks and track the various taxes. We use invoicing, A/R, estimates, and since we also sell product to support our projects, we use PO's and A/P. With almost 7 years of history in Quickbooks, I just am not compelled enough to change.Īs you stated, our accounting package needs as consultants aren't that large, so I'm sure just about any small biz accounting package will have the accounting features we need. I'm sure it will cover the basics and you can probably get a deal on it if you've applied as an MS Partner, but again, I have no real experience with it. MS has been pushing their small Accounting product for SMB's but I haven't tried it. Quickbooks is easy to set up and use, and since it's so popular, most accountants have it and will help you set up your quickbooks company file and chart of accounts.

Quickbooks Pro is about $200 per seat so it's not bad. We use Quickbooks Pro for our billing and all accounting practices, and we simply use our Outlook calendars sync'd with our PDA's for tracking our hours. I don't know of anything open source, but I haven't gone looking for it either.

Thanks, and I hope the answers help many people here.

While I am willing to pay for a proprietary product, I would be especially glad to find one that is open source. So I am hoping to get some feedback on what is good or bad. As an individual, I do not need anything as sophisticated as a larger consulting agency might use, but there are still dozens if not hundreds of programs out there to evaluate.

I do web and software development on a PC (running Windows XP) and I have already created an Excel spreadsheet for tracking billable hours, but have been looking into getting some simple software package for tracking hours and expenses and for generating invoices for clients. My situation is that I am starting to do some freelance consulting again (in addition to my regular job). What software do you use for tracking billable hours and creating invoices? This is a question for all the independent consultants, contractors, and freelancers out there.
